You'd be more than forgiven for not knowing who Klas Tybrandt is. The doctoral student at Linköping University is hardly a household name, but his latest creation may garner him some serious attention. The Swedish scientist has combined special transistors he developed into an integrated circuit capable of transmitting positive and negative ions as well as biomolecules. The advantage here is that, instead of simply controlling electronics, the circuits carry chemicals which can have a variety of functions, such as acetylcholine which the human body uses to transmit signals between cells. Implantable circuits that traffic in neurotransmitters instead of electrical voltages could be a key step in taking making our cyborg dreams a reality. We're already counting down the days till we're more machine than man.

NEW YORK (AP) ? When the Dramatists Guild Fund honors composer John Kander at a star-studded gala next month, there is very likely to be one person reluctant to be there. That would be John Kander.
"It scares me to death," says the Tony Award-winning songwriter with partner Fred Ebb of "Cabaret," ''Chicago" and "Kiss of the Spider Woman." ''I guess I'm not the world's most spotlight-oriented person."
The Dramatists Guild Fund is the public charity arm of the Dramatists Guild of America, which aids and nurtures writers for the theater. The fund is celebrating its 50th anniversary and chose Kander to honor since he is also celebrating his half-century of creating art.
The June 3 gala at the Mandarin Oriental New York hotel is slated to feature performances and tributes from Liza Minnelli, Chita Rivera, Bebe Neuwirth, Stockard Channing, Joel Grey, Christie Brinkley, Rob Marshall, Susan Stroman, Debra Monk, Karen Ziemba and Joshua Henry.
Fellow writers Stephen Sondheim, Stephen Schwartz and Terrance McNally also are expected to attend, and Jon Cryer, the star of "Two and a Half Men," will serve as host. Tickets start at $500.
"It is going to be a wonderful, big lovefest," says Gretchen Cryer, president of the Dramatists Guild Fund. "Everybody wanted to do it. He's very beloved. Everybody loves John."
Minnelli would be at the top of that list. She teamed with Kander and Ebb multiple times, including a taped version of her live show "Liza With a 'Z'" in 1972. It won eight Emmy Awards and the soundtrack went gold.
"They invented me," says the actress, who also earned an Academy Award for playing Sally Bowles in "Cabaret" on screen and a Tony for the Kander and Ebb musical "The Act." ''With 'Liza With a "Z,'" they gave me a real identity. The way they write, there's nobody like them. Nobody."
Kander, who just turned 85, hasn't stopped working following Ebb's death in 2004 ? not by a long shot. He and Ebb's last musical "The Scottsboro Boys" received 12 Tony Award nominations in 2011 and Kander has for the past few years been collaborating with 34-year-old lyricist Greg Pierce.
Their haunting musical "The Landing," currently being developed off-Broadway at the Vineyard Theatre with David Hyde Pierce, features three distinct stories performed by an ensemble of four.
"I guess that has been a rejuvenating process because it's the first person that I've worked with on a real basis since Fred," says Kander. "It's a whole new experience. I'm enjoying it a lot."
For Cryer, Kander's staying power is inspiring. She notes that he received the Kennedy Center Honors award for Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998. "Look what he's done since then," she says. "Isn't it amazing that he's going strong? He's a mid-career artist at age 85."
Kander says he never worried if his creative juices would still be flowing strong after Ebb's death. "Life goes on and changes happen," he says. "I don't think I ever had a kind of fear of what was going to happen to me creatively in the future. I just know that I'm having a really, really good time right now."
Minnelli, too, is going strong with concerts planned and has just had a recording of her 1974 concert "Live at the Winter Garden" released for the first time on CD, packed with Kander and Ebb jewels. "I'd forgotten how many terrific things they wrote," she says. "Even now, a lot of what I say on stage is due to Kander and Ebb. And what I feel is due to Kander."
Kander says he doesn't know any details of the Dramatists Guild gala ? and wants to keep it that way. He suspects old friends will be present but gets uncomfortable thinking about it.
"The safest place for me in the world is a rehearsal room full of people who are really talented and who care about making some kind of art. The rest of it I'm not really comfortable with," he says.
"That all sounds very ungracious. I'm very touched to be honored by the Dramatists Guild, which is an organization that means a great deal to me. But I kind of wish it was about somebody else."
He may try to hide under the table.
"He can't," says Minnelli with a huge laugh. "I'm sitting next to him."

Foreclosures Push Home Prices To Lowest Levels In A Decade
It?s official (if it wasn?t already): Homebuyers and real estate investors today are in the driver?s seat. It?s official (if it wasn?t already): Homebuyers and real estate investors today are in the driver?s seat. And it?s probably not a stretch to say that they will be riding shotgun, too, for the foreseeable future.
S&P/Case-Shiller released its latest home price index of 20 major cities located throughout the United States, indicating that collective home prices have not been this low since Nov. 2002. Recent statistics from the National Association of REALTORS (NAR) bolster the report, suggesting that the national median existing-home price for all housing types is currently hovering at a very affordable $154,700.
?Affordable? when you consider that in 2007, at the height of the real estate boom, the national median existing-home price for all housing types was sitting at $219,000. In other words, homebuyers today are shaving an average of about $64,000 right off the top of their real estate investments when compared to just five years ago.
That?s not chump change. And we?re not even drilling down to the distressed market, which is where most of the larger savings ? anywhere from 25 to 75 percent off retail ? exist. In fact, foreclosure and short sale properties for sale are a major reason for the recent record-setting low prices.
Business Week has the details:
Rising foreclosures are weighing on the U.S. housing market, reducing prices and keeping new-home sales weak. Foreclosed homes are usually sold at steep discounts, thereby lowering average prices. And by expanding the supply of low-priced previously occupied homes, foreclosures tend to limit demand for new homes. Some economists expect foreclosures to keep prices under pressure this year, even though they think sales of previously occupied homes will rise.
These latest figures seem to suggest that it would behoove buyers who can qualify for mortgages, as well as lock-in desirable low interest rates, to act swiftly. The pool of foreclosures and short sales, for now, is relatively deep. However, the best deals will (and are) go rapidly, which will drain money-saving opportunities from the foreclosure pool. And the prices will only get higher as the pool gets more shallow.
Sure, it?s a process that will take time. But, how long? There?s no sense in waiting when you are guaranteed to save right now on the potential investment of a lifetime. At the very least, you should check out your desired area/neighborhood to see what is available and what is (and isn?t) in your price range.
While the overall real estate market might be slower to correct, local areas will start to see the uptick first and foremost. Right now you have the keys to perhaps drive your very own luxury/dream car for a fraction of its cost ? don?t wait only to become a grumpy backseat driver.

Welcome to Day 21 of our 21-day Virtual Healthy Child Party: Stay Safe in the Summer Sun!
We?re excited you want to participate and can?t wait for all the great conversations and questions today and in the days to come!
To participate in today?s Virtual Healthy Child Party and Giveaway, please check out our review of Dolphin Organics new Natural Sunscreen, and answer the question that follows in the comments section below.
The summer sun is shining, families everywhere are hitting parks, pools, oceans, amusement parks and all things outdoors. While it is important to protect our families? skin from the damaging rays from the sun all year around, it is especially important when they are spending many hours each day in the sun. According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG.org),?Seeking shade, avoiding the sun during peak hours and wearing sun-protective clothing, including hats and sunglasses go a long way to minimize exposure to harmful rays.? And of course, sunscreens are also an important part of full-sun protection routine.
EWG?s top recommendations to help consumers find safe and effective sunscreens include:
Healthy Home Magazine is comfortable recommending products which rate in the 0-2 range?for low toxicity in the Environmental Working Group?s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database. As you learned on Virtual Healthy Child Party Day 14 (Go Non-Toxic at Bathtime), Dolphin Organics? full line of bath products rate 0-1 for lowest toxicity. DO Naturals? bran new Sunscreen product rates a 2? as it contains Titanium Dioxide and >100nm Zinc Oxide, both of which also rate a 2. Learn more about these ratings here.
Why the shift to ?Naturals? branding for the new sunscreen product? Says co-founder Ayo Hart, ?We did not want to mislead our consumers by introducing our sunscreen under our Dolphin Organics brand because while it is 100% natural, non-chemical and non-invasive; it is not at least 70% organic because of the inclusion of the natural active ingredients titanium and zinc oxide so we launched our new line DO Naturals?. DO Naturals? first product, their brand new SPF 32 mineral sunscreen, is receiving rave reviews for its effective yet gentle formula. Created not only to comply with the new FDA Regulations, but more importantly with the health of families at the forefront of their thoughts, DO Naturals? Mineral Sunscreen provides broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) protection. Like their flagship non-toxic baby bath products, the sunscreen is based in certified organic aloe, not water. Active ingredients are Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide, and inactive ingredients are 100% natural. It is gentle enough for babies and children, but enjoyed by the whole family.
What?s so special about Dolphin Organics?? As parents of twin girls, the co-founders wanted to use only natural and organic products for their family. They found that most big brands contain artificial ingredients, and that many products whose labels claim to be natural and organic also contain artificial and potentially harmful ingredients. So they decided that the best way to get the products that they wanted was to make their own. With some help from their team of Dolphin Moms?, the result is Dolphin Organics? and DO Naturals? personal care products, made only with natural and organic ingredients. Nothing man-made. Nothing artificial ? not even the preservatives. Their label is clear and honest, and shows you exactly what they put in there.
I had the opportunity to try DO Naturals? Sunscreen on my own family. Here are a few of my favorite things about it:
As a thank you for participating in our Virtual Healthy Child Party, one lucky reader will win a DO Naturals? Sunscreen and cute bucket hat (Approximate Retail Value ~$25.00) plus a gift bag filled with safer product samples and coupons from Healthy Child Healthy World?s Trusted Partner Community (worth min. $25.00 in products and savings), for a total retail value of $50.00!

We all know the coffee shop WiFi routine: crack open the laptop, visit a splash page, and dutifully wait until you're logged in before you get to Twitter. Through a new deal between Intel and DeviceScape, you won't even have to think about it. Intel's Smart Connect tool will soon automatically sign in your Ultrabook to a curated list of quality, open WiFi hotspots, even if the PC is fast asleep. This last trick might need Windows 8's Connected Standby mode to live up to Intel's expectations, but the dream is to have your email and social feeds updated and waiting before that laptop or tablet screen has even blinked into life. Intel is leaving some gaps in the story, such as whether or not gadget owners will pay a premium for the fast access. We'd guess that Intel is counting on higher computer (and more importantly, processor) sales to make up the difference.

How can one classify a true adult? Many people directly attribute age to adulthood. The problem with this methodology becomes evident when you discuss the topic with various people of different cultural backgrounds. Adult may not mean you can operate the raymond mill. If you ask each of them what age they believe constitutes the point at which a person progresses from childhood into adulthood, their answers will always be different. Why? Because every one of the answers are based on subjective opinion. Adulthood is not based age; it?s based strictly on emotional maturity.
So what constitutes emotional maturity, and thus adulthood? Here are 20 defining characteristics of a true adult:
Realizing that maturity is an ongoing process, not a state, and continuously striving for self improvement.
Able to manage personal jealousy and feelings of envy.
Has the ability to listen to and evaluate the viewpoints of others.
Maintains patience and flexibility on a daily basis.
Accepts the fact that you can?t always win, and learns from mistakes instead of whining about the outcome.
Does not overanalyze negative points, but instead looks for the positive points in the subject being analyzed.
Is able to differentiate between rational decision making and emotional impulse.
Understands that no skill or talent can overshadow the act of preparation.
Capable of managing temper and anger.
Keeps other people?s feeling in mind and limits selfishness.
Being able to distinguish between ?needs? and ?wants?
Shows confidence without being overly arrogant.
Handles pressure with self composure.
Takes ownership and responsibility of personal actions.
Manages personal fears.
Able to see the various shades of grey between the extremes of black and white in every situation.
Accepts negative feedback as a tool for self improvement.
Aware of personal insecurities and self-esteem.
Able to separate true love from transitory infatuation.
Understanding that open communication is the key to progression.
Above all, true adults do what they have to do when it is required of them, and they do what they want when they can. They are able to distinguish between the two and manage their time and efforts accordingly.

RIM also hires advisers to look at strategies to reverse its downturn. RIM has seen its share of US smartphone market fall from 44 percent to 10 percent in two years.?

In this May file photo, Thorsten Heins, president and CEO of Research In Motion (RIM), delivers the keynote speech during the BlackBerry World conference in Orlando, Fla. The struggling Blackberry-maker on Tuesday, May 29, 2012, warned that it will have an operating loss in the current March-June quarter and said there will be significant layoffs this year.

RIM also said in a release that it has hired J.P. Morgan and RBC Capital Markets to help the company evaluate various strategies, including opportunities to partner with other companies and license software as well as other alternatives.
Waterloo, Ontario-based RIM made no mention of a sale of the company but new chief executive Thorsten Heins did not rule it out after RIM's last earnings were released in late March.
"It's a disaster, it's bad," Jefferies analyst Peter Misek said. "The problem is you can't see a path to a sale until you stabilize the business."
Misek said if the advisers weren't brought in to consider a sale originally they are likely considering it now. Misek expects RIM to announce as many as 5,000 layoffs soon.
RIM's stock was halted in after-hours trading Tuesday. When trading resumed shares fell more than 10 percent, or $1.20, to $10.03.
The once-iconic RIM, the company that pioneered the smartphone market with its?Blackberry?phones, is facing the most difficult period in its history. RIM's U.S. share of smartphones dropped from 44 percent in 2009 to 10 percent in 2011, according to market researcher NPD Group. The company still has 78 million active subscribers across the globe, but Apple and Android phone makers such as Samsung and HTC are taking market share.
The company is working on the launch of a new software operating system, but that's happening just as North Americans are abandoning their?BlackBerry's?for flashier and more versatile smartphones like Apple's iPhone and phones that run Google's Android software.
"The on-going competitive environment is impacting our business in the form of lower volumes and highly competitive pricing dynamics in the marketplace, and we expect our (current quarter's) results to reflect this, and likely result in an operating loss for the quarter," new chief executive Thorsten Heins said.
Heins, formerly a little known chief operating officer at RIM, took over in January after RIM founder Mike Lazaridis and longtime executive Jim Balsillie stepped down as Co-CEOs after the company lost tens of billions in market value.
RIM said there will be staff reductions among its 16,500 employees and significant spending cuts as the company looks to save a $1 billion ? even as it transitions to its much-delayed "BlackBerry?10" software platform expected out later this year.
RIM reiterated that its financial performance will continue to be challenged for the next few quarters.
Misek believes that had?BlackBerry?10 been released last year, the company might have had a chance, but he said now RIM is likely to release the new?BlackBerrys?right when Apple is due to introduce a new iPhone.
Colin Gillis, an analyst with BGC Financial, called it a downward slide that's not going to get any better. Gillis said he doesn't see any buyers for RIM coming forward soon.
Gillis said the advisers are likely presenting a number of options, including a sale, split up of the software and hardware business or a continued attempt to turn the company round. Gillis said RIM could license something like its popular?BlackBerry?messenger service.
"Unfortunately, it falls into the too little, too late category," Gillis said. "It doesn't mean somebody won't try it. It doesn't mean it's going to be a savior for the company either."
Gillis believes RIM is fighting against some of the best talent in the world in Google, Apple and Samsung in a fast-moving marketplace.
"They were the leader and this is what happens in the technology cycle of creation and destruction. They rode the first wave of the smartphone revolution and Apple is riding the next one," Gillis said.
BlackBerrys?lag iPhones and Android phones when it comes to third-party applications or "apps," small software programs that perform one or two tasks like editing mobile photos or displaying sports scores. The iPhone's popularity has continued to skyrocket as Apple has developed a vast ecosystem of apps. Now, RIM must persuade developers that it's worth their time and effort to make apps for the?BlackBerry?10 platform.
RIM has tried to make showier phones with touchscreens that resemble the iPhone's, but those offerings have largely flopped. And so has RIM's tablet, the PlayBook, which uses the very software that will be in the newBlackBerry?10 smartphones.
RIM is following the same trajectory as struggling Finnish handset makers Nokia and California-based Palm, both of which attracted consumers with trend-setting phones and technologies in their heyday, only to be outmaneuvered by competitors. In Canada, there is fear that the nation's biggest technology company could go the way of former Canadian tech giant Nortel, which declared bankruptcy in 2009 and was picked over for its patents.
"It is a very bad situation for Canada, primarily because this was the national champion," Misek said. "What this illustrates is you have to be globally competitive and you've got to remain globally competitive."

Marley is highly watchable, finely crafted legacy preservation - and it's either a white-washed sham or awesomely shaded.
It wants to show us the man behind the famous dreads, beatific smile and durable songs of love, hope and longing. In this task it succeeds admirably.
Sprinkled with riffs, concert footage and home videos, the family-authorized documentary does what the artist usually did: When in doubt, return to the beat.
Macdonald supplies some interesting and novel details about the musician's life and art, though the movie's narrative arc and documentary methods are totally predictable.
Bob Marley wrote the same song about 8,000 times, and the documentary "Marley" makes sure to include each version.
This is a life story worth telling, and "Marley" does it much justice. Marley may or may not have been perfect, but he was certainly fascinating.
Bob Marley's short but amazing life
Similarly, with 'Marley,' Macdonald provides some much needed context to the songs that have sold millions of copies throughout the world.
It is the work of a man with opinions, based on endless questioning and research.
Kevin Macdonald's "Marley" is worth sticking with, and not just for diehard fans who had "Get Up, Stand Up" emanating from their dorm room speakers all through college.
Bob Marley fanatics are going to treat this film like the Holy Bible.
Will get you up to speed regarding all things Marley.
For a movie this long, it's too bad there isn't more footage of Marley in performance, joyously bringing music to the world.
...likely as close as we'll ever come to a definitive film biography of this gnomic figure.
Macdonald effectively lets the talking heads and the music explain the longevity of Marley's appeal.
Recounts a short life that seemed to straddle worlds and eras, and perhaps the definitive portrait will never be filmed or written. Until it is, though, there's always the music.
A truly human portrait of an extraordinary life.
Marley is a terrific documentary. It goes beyond one figure, and captures the essence of life itself. The film is as infectious and spiritual as one of his songs.
Good documentaries make us want to know more about their subject. But great ones like Marley don't need to.
It's certainly comprehensive, even if -- at two and a half hours long -- not exactly concise.
If you'd asked me a month ago how Marley had died, I might have cluelessly suggested a drug overdose.
Chronicles the life and times of the first musical superstar from the third world to gain a global audience, with the reggae singer's posthumous Legend album selling some 25 million copies.
